Comedy Crew
Last Wednesday night, I was told that after our service there would be a comedy crew to come and bring the men some laughter and entertainment. They apparently also share their testimonies and the Gospel.
After the crowd of men left the dinner tables, I went to go talk with the comedy crew. They were apparently going to be at the service and begin their entertainment sometime after we finished.
I don’t know how good the group was. They apparently come once a month. They were three African American men in their thirties. One was calm, quiet, and sardonic. I imagine he had a subtle wit that was used as a punch line. Another of the men was the conversationalist, and likely the life of the crew. The other was just along for the ride, it seems.
The guys asked me where I was from, and I mentioned that I was living in a part of town which is pretty well-off. The quiet sardonic man gave me a hard time for that. What could I do but take it on the chin. Little do they know how hard I have to work to pay the bills and that my only financial privilege is that the Lord provides for our needs. But I do imagine they have had it harder than me. But little do they know what this white kid goes through, and has gone through in his past.
Even with that blip in the conversation, it was pleasant. The outgoing conversationalist was asking about me. He found out that I was preaching, and he would begin his questions with an epithet. “So, Reverend Jake…”
“Well, I am not a reverend.”
“Ok. So Bishop Jake…I’ll give you a new title every time…”
“I am beginning to like this. I am getting promoted!” I said.
And later, “So Cardinal Jake…”
“OOO, I am going to be pope soon!”
Finally, it was, “So prophet Jake…”
The men joined us for the service. I began my message with, “As you know, tonight is comedy night. I am not the comedy for tonight!” It was the night I mentioned before that I preached on Isaiah 53.
After the service, the one who gave me epithets came up to me and said, “It’s evangelist Jake!” I kinda like that.
How lovely on the mountains
Are the feet of him who brings good news,
Who announces peace
And brings good news of happiness,
Who announces salvation,
And says to Zion, "Your God reigns!"
Isaiah 52:7
